Before any Indian seafarer signs Articles, one document matters as much as the CDC and passport: the Medical Certificate of Physical Fitness. This guide explains who needs it, what standards apply, and how the process works in 2026.
Only medical examiners and centres approved by the Directorate General of Shipping (DG Shipping / DGMA India) may issue the certificate. Approvals are granted for five years against valid medical council registration, and certificates are uploaded to the DGS electronic records system. Always verify your examiner β our DGMA approval page shows you how.
Deck officers and lookouts must meet strict distant vision and colour perception standards (Ishihara testing); engine and catering staff have comparatively relaxed colour requirements. Corrective lenses are permitted for many roles if unaided vision meets minimums.
Pure-tone audiometry must show hearing adequate for safe watchkeeping and alarm response.
Blood pressure, BMI, cardiac and respiratory status, and freedom from conditions likely to be aggravated at sea or endanger the ship are all assessed. The full test list is here.
